We are big fans of RunDisney events because they are insanely fun and really well run! So on our recent agency trip aboard the Disney Dream, a few of us decided to do the Castaway Cay 5K when we docked at Disney’s private island! Thinking about doing it when you set sail? You should, and here’s why:
It’s Well Organized
Disney does a really good job making sure their races are clearly marked, there’s plentiful water and any questions are quickly answered. This run was no exception. There are markers throughout the course, a big board showing the race course ahead of time, and a water station that you end up passing 4 times.
It’s Hot and There’s Not a Lot of Shade
The run starts at about 8:30 in the morning. In the Bahamas. Things are hot and sweaty even if you aren’t running or walking 3.1 miles. Add this normal heat to a race course with very little shade and you will be sweating. There are a lot of trees all over the route, but they don’t do a whole lot to keep you cool.
You Can Walk It
I decided to run because I may be slightly crazy, but the rest of the team walked. Everyone does their own things-we saw people pushing strollers and wearing flip flops. I even saw someone walking with a race bib on and a beer in hand (yes, at 8:30 in the morning). Judgment free zone.
You Probably Won’t PR
The route is incredibly flat, but the chance of hitting a PR is slim to none. In fact, I was 6 minutes slower than my PR and didn’t care at all. The atmosphere isn’t going to push you (there’s no one cheering on the side of the road or fun music), it’s hot as anything and there are people walking right through the race course who aren’t even participating! Yup, I had to yell “on your left” 3 times to a couple walking hand in hand to the beach, blissfully unaware that they were right in the middle of a 5K. And that’s OK.
BLING
Let’s be honest, we all love race bling. Everyone who finishes receives a medal when they cross the finish line. You won’t be told “congratulations Princess” by everyone you see like you do after a WDW race, but you still have that pride moment. Wear is proudly!
