I will be honest with you. The first time I went to Keystone I did not leave there thinking is was a great option for families. Well, I visited this past weekend, and I am happy to report that I have 100% changed my mind! From special activities just for kids to alternative activities to skiing, Keystone was a blast for our family! Here are some of the family-friendly highlights that I loved the most.
Kidtopia:
Kidtopia is a program that provides (mostly) free activities for kids. The activities are pre-scheduled and predictable by the day of the week. To give you an idea of the activities offered, we were there on a Saturday, and my girls got to have their face painted, do a craft, and play while my husband was busy skiing. The face painting was really great! The lady was fast, patient with my little one, and very friendly. There was also a parade and fireworks scheduled for later in the afternoon, but we had to leave before they started. The headquarters is located in Keystone’s village of River Run. This is their largest village. Inside headquarters there are toys, clean restrooms, and water. It is brightly painted and had activities for a wide range of ages. There is also an ice fort on one of the peaks that is part of the Kidtopia program. It is free to visit the fort, but you will need a lift ticket to get up to it. It is a great way to take a little break from skiing.
Alternate Activities:
Keystone has so many alternative activities to skiing! Some of my favorites are ice skating at 2 different locations (one is a frozen lake!), sleigh rides, tubing, and even a scavenger hunt. There is of course shopping and great places to eat as well. The Kidtopia program mentioned above is great for those littles who are too young or cannot ski the entire day.
Transportation:
Keystone is big, really big! Thankfully they provide shuttles that can get you all around the resort. I visited three different villages this past weekend using the shuttle service and was very pleased with their punctuality and efficiency. I was also very impressed with Keystone employees’ knowledge of which shuttle was best to take.
Proximity:
Keystone is great by itself, but if you wanted to experience more than one ski resort on your trip, Keystone is only a short drive from Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin. You could hop over and ski one of them for the day or head to Breckenridge for dinner one evening!
Night Skiing:
Keystone offers something very unique. You can ski at night there! This is not something that is offered at most resorts and something the avid skier or snowboarder must experience at least once in their life! I am warning you though – it is cold, so bundle up!!!
If Keystone sounds like a place for your family, let us know! We would love to help you plan your ski vacation!
