We have all heard the stories of rental car prices skyrocketing and shortages. Don’t let this discourage you from taking a much-needed vacation. My family rarely rents a car when we travel. Here are some of the ways we vacation sans rental car!
1) Drive to your destination.
This seems obvious, but look at your vacation expenses both flying and renting a car and driving. If a having your own car on vacation is a must, this might be a great option for you.
2) Research hotels with free or low cost shuttles.
One of the requirements for my family is that the hotel we choose must have an airport shuttle. It takes so much stress out of our vacation. I have also found that if you call and speak directly with the resort, many times they provide transportation to other destinations besides the airport.
3) Pay for the excursions that include transportation.
Again, a cost analysis might be needed here, but it might save you money to pre purchase your transportation as part of your excursion package.
4) Rent someone’s personal vehicle.
Think Vrbo for cars. New apps are now out there that allow you to rent a person’s personal car while you are on vacation.
5) Uber/Lyft/Taxi
There is always the tried and true method of requesting a ride share service. It could get pricey, but if you have transportation arranged for the majority of your trip and just need a ride to a couple events, these are always a great option.
