As we all continue to pine for travel during these hard times, I have been thinking a lot lately about one of my favorite trips of all time– a Danube River cruise with AmaWaterways. One of my favorite parts of this entire experience was the opportunity to take in several Christmas Markets in large cities like Vienna and Budapest to smaller places like Salzburg and Passau.

What is a Christmas Market? These are amazing little street fairs that take place during the Advent season across central and eastern Europe. With many in existence for more than four centuries, these markets are really great little windows into old Europe and the unique cultures that have grown up in the towns.

At each stop you can see a wide variety of experiences, small outdoor shops to purchase from, and amazing food. From  unique Christmas ornaments to hand made gifts, there is so many things you can find that you simply will not find at home in a store. The food is also amazing and unique to the location of the market, but mulled wine is a pretty standard offering! For experiences we saw everything from ice skating in Vienna to a Krampus street show in Salzburg.

Check out this great preview video below from AmaWaterways. And of course reach out to our team if you would like to look at booking one of these experiences– we are booking these as far out as Christmas time 2022!
